Caught & Social: Ricky – the godfather of cameos

Ricky Gervais leaves the NBC studios in New York with girlfriend Jane Fallon after recording an interview on the Today show. The comic is promoting his latest role, lending his voice to the newest instalment Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D (the fourth dimension, he says, is “smell”) and seems happy to be doing these sort of roles. “[I’m] like Marlon Brando in Superman,”he said. “A million dollars for a day’s work. Except that I missed out on a 40-year career of great work he had. I just went straight to cameos.”

Matt Damon is a rare voice in the US budget debate: he wants to pay more tax. “The wealthy are paying less than they paid at ay time else, certainly in my lifetime, and probably in the last century… is it really that much worse if you pay 6 per cent more in taxes? Give me a break. Look at what you get for it: you get to be American.”

Meanwhile, Damon’s friend George Clooney is happier. Or he is, if you believe Life and Style magazine. It reports that the actor has been holed up in his Lake Como mansion with Stacy Keibler, a former WWE Wrestler. During the trip, she tweeted: “I’m in heaven.” So it must be true.

Stephen Fry suffered perhaps the greatest insult to a liberal-minded, thinking man – being mistaken for a Top Gear presenter. “Half NZ convinced I’m James May,” Fry tweeted from New Zealand. “If I deny being James May then am I Jeremy Clarkson?” He added: “A damned good haircut should end this. I’m hoping.”

Miranda Kerr and Natalie Imbruglia pose backstage at the David Jones Summer Fashion show in Sydney. Model Kerr was unwinding after a long evening on the catwalk, which was her first day back on the job after taking seven months off on maternity leave. Her son Flynn, meanwhile, was in safe hands – he was being looked after by his father, and Kerr’s boyfriend, the British actor Orlando Bloom.

Brazilian football hero, campaigner and an international face of Viagra, Pele arrived at 10 Downing Street all smiles yesterday. We can only imagine his disappointment when he realised that neither David Cameron nor Nick Clegg were there to welcome him in, having chosen to go off on holiday instead. Thankfully, someone was around to open the door and Pele (who is no stranger to the number 10) got to host a kickabout in the Downing Street Garden. Still, at least, it meant no more shots of our leaders wearing shorts…

Straight talking from Jessie J

Arriving at a television studio in England meanwhile, was Jessie J. The singer, on crutches after breaking her foot earlier this year, was at the ITV studios for Alan Carr: Chatty Man. She was also wearing her finest purple hair, which she plans to shave next year in aid of charity. Recently the singer came out in the tabloid press as bisexual. Not something we would normally mention, but for her tweet earlier: “Really annoys me when newspapers put ‘Jessie J the bisexual singer’ would they put ‘Beyonc? the straight singer’?” Quite.

“Someone asked me what flavour the pizza was – but you don’t taste pizza with your eyes, do you?” Magician Paul Daniels, who was hospitalised after being hit by a pizza which was thrown by Sooty
