Electronic cigarettes: Harmful or helpful?

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - It’s another way of quitting smoking, and Gwynne Chesher thought it was just what she needed to help her quit her tobacco habit of more than 40 years.

"I was really impressed. I thought this could be the thing that makes me stop smoking completely,” said the Wellington resident.

She was pleased with the progress she was making, but when she told her doctor about it he told her to stop.

"There's no information about whether they're safe or not and that's part of the problem,” added Dr. Robert Greene, who treats lung cancer patients at the Palm Beach Cancer Institute.

But a representative of the group that manufactures the smoking alternative has a different view.

"I'm not going to debate whether this particular product is addictive or not. At the end of the day we wanted to bring a product to the market that was 1400 times less harmful than traditional cigarettes,” he said.

What is this alternative to cigarettes? What does the government say about it? It’s a Contact 5 Investigators special report, Tuesday at 11 p.m. on NewsChannel 5.
