Fayetteville VA names new chief of medicine

The Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center announced a new chief of medicine Friday.

Dr. Nasimul Ahsan will oversee operations of all inpatient, specialty and emergency room patient care for the hospital, according to a news release.

He replaces Dr. Peter Chung, who will remain at the medical center in a different capacity.

Ahsan is board-certified in nephrology, which deals with the function and diseases of the kidney.

He has more than three decades of medical experience and most recently worked as interim associate chief of staff of physical and rehabilitation medicine and chief of nephrology at the W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury.

The Salisbury VA is the largest in the mid-Atlantic region, according to a VA spokesman.

"I'm very excited about coming to Fayetteville in this capacity," Ahsan said in a statement. "We have a wonderful staff who are proud of providing outstanding care for our veterans, and I'm proud to be part of that staff."

The Fayetteville VA Medical Center provides care for nearly 50,000 veterans in 21 counties in North and South Carolina.

Last year, there were more than 389,000 outpatient visits at the medical center and its seven satellites, and more than 2,700 veterans were admitted for inpatient care, the center said.

Previously, Ahsan was an attending transplant physician at the Mayo Clinic Hospital and St. Luke's Hospital, both in Jacksonville, Fla.

He is a graduate of Chittagong Medical College in Chittagong, Bangladesh, and completed residency programs at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Penn.; University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore; Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk, Va.; and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Ahsan has a masters degree in business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and American Society of Nephrology. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and American College of Physician Executives.
