
JAIPUR: Health minister A A Khan on Monday directed all district collectors and chief medical health officers (CMHO) to pay more attention on implementing the free medicine scheme properly as the number of patients have increased in government hospitals.
The minister gave the directions during a video conference.
Khan said guidelines, additional budget and directions related to the free distribution of medicines have already been issued and it is now the responsibility of CMHOs and collectors to implement the scheme properly.
Problems in hospitals escalated when patients came in swarms due to seasonal diseases and to avail the benefits of the free medicine scheme. The medical and health department faced a lot of criticism for failing to cater to the increased demand of free medicines.
Minister of state for health Rajkumar Sharma, who inspected the SMS Hospital on Monday, too, faced complaints from patients on the unavailability of essential medicines. The minister assured the patients that situation would normalize after some days and all essential medicines will be available at the drug distribution centres.
Principal health secretary B N Sharma, while giving figures of the increasing number of patients in government hospitals, said all the essential drugs would be made available to the patients.
On October 1, the number of patients at MBS Hospital in Kota was 721 but on October 12 it increased to 1,612 patients, he said. Similarly, in JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur the number of patients before scheme was implemented on October 1 was 279 but it has increased to 373 on October 12.
Sharma attributed the increase number of patients in government hospitals of the state to seasonal diseases and the free medicine scheme.
