Indian actor vows to quit smoking

Popular Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan, who is a self-confessed chain smoker, says he is going to kick the habit following the release of his latest movie, reports British entertainment news portal Digital Spy.

Citing an interview Khan recently gave to an English-language Indian broadsheet, Digital Spy notes the celebrity actor is determined to quit smoking after his next movie Ra.One hits the screen later this month. One of the characters in the movie is a heavy smoker.

Khan had earlier said in an interview to the Times of India that he became addicted to smoking during his initial years as a theatre actor, admitting that smoking is a difficult habit to beat. Now 45, the actor had promised to stop smoking when he turned 40, but failed to keep his word. It may be noted that smoking cessation is difficult because of the highly addictive nature of nicotine.

According to Digital Spy, a scene from Khan??s next movie hits out against tobacco smoking referring to the adverse impacts of nicotine. In the Indian society, celebrity figures are often involved in spearheading quit smoking drives to promote public awareness and inspire people to try smoking cessation. Given the constant craze and buzz surrounding Bollywood, Khan??s step might motivate many of his young fans from India and abroad to quit smoking.

Quite interestingly, the superstar actor says one of the reasons behind his decision to stop smoking is the fact that his daughter does not like it. Now if this message gets out to even a small percentage of smokers who have responsibilities for their families, we can soon have more non-smokers than direct and passive smokers in the world.
