A complimentary and alternative medical practice involves dealing with the whole person, which includes dealing with the body and the mind as well. It is not considered a conventional approach to dealing with medical issues such as you would find in a medical doctor.

Great care in seeking this type of practitioner out should be given and researched so as to find the best possible means of treatment for a person. Ask your primary care physician if he or she is willing to make a referral as to which practitioner they recommend. However, many medical doctors are not comfortable with this. A medical school or hospital might also have a listing of the holistic medicine practitioners in your area.

Check also with your insurance company since some insurance policies dont cover holistic medicine and others dont require a referral to see a practitioner.

Making a list of holistic medicine practitioners in your area would be the next step in the process. When interviewing each of them take the time to find out about the medical practices that they can offer you and just what each of these entails. You will want to ask many questions regarding their credentials that they hold and how long they have been practicing this particular type of method.

Other important issues to discuss would be their licensing and/or certifications that they hold in the holistic medical approach. You should find out the cost of their recommended therapy.

Contacting your insurance company regarding cost and treatment would be wise before you actually undergo any form of treatment. Bringing a family member or a friend with you is always helpful. The practitioner will have numerous questions about your medical history and medications that you might be taking so it is best to be prepared on the first visit with all of this information.

Bring along with you any prescription and non-prescription medications that you are taking including any vitamin or herbal supplements. They will want to take note of them on this visit.

Once you visit the holistic medicine practitioner it is important that you are comfortable with him or her and that the plan of treatment that they have in mind for you sounds right for your condition. If it all uncomfortable with either of these then it is best to continue seeking a practitioner until you find the one that seems right for you and your medical condition that you are seeking treatment for.

When you do find someone that you are comfortable with and the treatments that have been recommended are underway you will know whether it is working for you in alleviating the problem that you are there for. If at any time something does not feel as it should or the treatment is not helping you then, is with any form of medical treatment, stopping the treatment would be advisable.

Careful decisions based on all of the above aspects should be considered when seeking any form of medical treatment. You are the best judge of what is helping your body and what is not.
