Belgian coach Paul Put has been sacked as coach of The Gambia senior national team after the nation’s latest 2012 Africa Cup of nations qualifier setback, Gambia Sports Online can confirm.
Put is sacked after failing to meet the terms of his contract which was to qualify The Gambia to the African Cup of Nations or the World Cup.
He took over the Gambian national team in 2007 but his contract was later renewed in 2009 to a four-year contract but he paid the price as he failed to qualify for the tournament, no thanks to a 1-1 draw with the Stallions of Burkina Faso a few weeks ago.
He has only seen two-and-half years to his contract which was due to expire 2013.
“My mission is simple; qualify The Gambia for the next world cup in 2010 and African cup of nations in 2012 and that I will succeed in with great confidence. Mr. President, my promise to you is not just to qualify The Gambia for 2012 World Cup but also develop and market the football in The Gambia, I know how you and the Gambian people love football and that is the foundation to my assignment,” were the words of Paul Put when his contract was been renewed in 2008 by the Gambian head of state but he failed to stick to his words.
