Pharmavite breaks ground in Opelika

Gov. Robert Bentley speaks at Monday morning's Pharmavite groundbreaking in Opelika.

It turns out that what’s good for one’s health is also good for the local economy.

A laundry list of state and local officials, including Gov. Robert Bentley as well as Pharmavite LLC representatives, converged on the Northeast Opelika Industrial Park Monday for the groundbreaking on the California-based vitamin manufacturer’s 330,000 square-foot facility that is expected to bring 280 jobs.

“It’s great to come to an area and make two announcements like this,” Bentley said. “This is a good product that they make and these are types of companies that we want to recruit into Alabama.”

“The jobs and investment Pharmavite is making in Alabama helps us show the rest of the world that Alabama is a great place to live and do business,” said Bentley in a release.

Pharmative will invest approximately $76 million in capital during the construction phase of its facilities. The Opelika City Council met last week to consider providing additional financial incentives to Pharmavite. The city has already agreed to provide water and sewer lines to the facility at no cost to Pharmavite in addition to a number of construction fees that have been waived.

“This has been a long time in the making and I’m looking forward to a long and healthy relationship with Opelika and the greater Alabama community,” said Doug MacLean, Pharmavite CEO, at Monday’s groundbreaking. “This new facility represents a significant step in the growth of Pharmavite… and I am confident that the facility here in Opelika will help us continue our legacy of leadership.”

Pharmavite officials project that the facility, that will produce Nature Made soft gels and tablets, will be operational in early 2013.
