A section of the roof is missing from part of an apartment building in southwest Springfield after a fire late Sunday morning. The Fire Marshal says careless smoking is to blame.
He says someone smoking on the porch of a third floor apartment at Golden and Republic Road didn't put out the cigarette when they were finished.
Strong winds took it from there, fueling flames that Спрэд across several other units. Crews say the fire gutted as many as six apartments.
Officials say they don't expect criminal charges to be filed, since the fire was deemed accidental. However, the person who left the cigarette behind may be found liable down the road.
Aside from someone being treated for stress-related chest pains, there were no injuries reported. Rescue crews say that's largely due to neighbors and passers by helping get people out of the building.

Some of the witnesses tell KTTS News reporter Jason Rima at the scene they were driving by and saw the smoke, then the flames. They felt compelled to stop and help.
